COVID-19 and children’s mental health
“A mini second wave” has reached our beautiful little island of Cyprus. We shouldn’t be worried about the direct implications of that, including obligatory masks, keeping distance and washing our hands.
I’m more worried about its implications on our younger children - specifically the mental health and well-being of 7-12 year olds. Unlike older teenagers who have the social media presence and peer support of children their own age, younger children have described feeling increased levels of loneliness, anxiety, worry and depression.
Please keep an eye out on your children and children you know who may be struggling during this time. Offer an age-appropriate explanation of the changes happening in our society, and answer any and all questions they have. Give a listening ear and some caring words to them - you’ll be surprised how much that can help.
If you’re worried about your child’s mental health, speak to a professional and seek help or advice. We still do not know the long-term implications of this, so keeping on top of our children’s physical and mental health should be a priority.
